Texas 30-day registration and 90-day license clocks

New residents have 30 days to register a car they own and 90 days to transfer a driver license. DPS appointments run about 60 days behind.

Two different deadlines

If you own a vehicle, register it within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Transfer your driver license within 90 days. The car clock does not extend the license clock.

Why the license appointment has to be booked early

DPS appointments run about 60 days behind. Book the license visit as soon as you have a Texas ZIP or city, or the slot can fall outside the 90-day license window. That 60 days is the backlog, not the temporary paper license you receive after the visit.

County before DPS when you own the car

Register the car at the county tax office before the license appointment if you own it. DPS will not issue the license while that car is unregistered. Do not sign the no-car statement if you own a car.

If you do not own a car, skip the county office. At the DPS window, sign the statement that you do not own a car. That is a different document from the Texas Residency Affidavit (Form DL-5), which is for someone whose bills are not in their name.
